Scarborough Borough Council


Project Type: Independent assessment of health of a protected tree which had deteriorated after pruning works sanctioned by the Council
Date: 2000
Details: The report examined the quality, timing and appropriateness of the tree works carried out, concluding that British Standard 3998 had not been adhered to.

Details: Over 5,000 trees within two districts of the city. Survey carried out using hand-held computers/Penmap software to map location of trees, identify any immediate problems and produce a rolling programme of management.

Lancaster Canal, Lancaster

Project type: Canal corridor woodland survey and management plan.
Client: British Waterways
Size: 3.2 miles of high density mature tree cover. The width of wooded embankment varied from 10-35m. Survey of both sides of ‘Deep Cutting’ to identify individual trees and areas of trees which would benefit from future management in order to maintain safety and improve ecological and landscape value.
Details: A plan was produced for the management of individual trees and areas of trees with regard to nature conservation, landscape and safety, prioritising and planning work to be carried out over a ten year period. All trees were digitally plotted onto Ordnance Survey sheets.

Details: Initial appraisal of the arboricultural issues involved in the restoration of an historic site of European importance; preparation of a phase ‘A’ report and bill of quantities for arboricultural works; overall advisor to the project team.

Project type: Survey and resurvey of protected trees within the walled grounds of St Saviours Church, York.
Details: A survey and annual inspection of a small number of protected and highly significant trees in an historic setting.



Four Oaks Estate, Sutton Coldfield

Project type: Mature street tree survey
Client: Four Oaks Estate
Size: A private estate of high value housing containing a mixed stock of unadopted street trees.
Details: Our contract is to survey all the trees annually for safety and programme any required works, adding to the population with new planting.



Bradford and Ilkley College


Date: 1999
Project type: Large scale tree survey
Client: Crest Homes plc
Size: 1,000 trees
Details: A large scale and detailed survey of all trees on campus including digital plotting using CAD software. This site was the haunt of Charles Darwin for six months after he wrote ‘The Origin of Species’ and he was effectively in hiding here. His influence on the grounds is still to be seen.

Elland Park Woods


Date: 1999
Project type: Woodland management plan for Elland Park Woods in Elland, West Yorkshire.
Client: Fennell Green & Bates, Mining Engineers.
Size: 37 Hectares of ancient woodland - one of the largest areas in West Yorkshire.
Details: A detailed study of the woodland was carried out followed by a management plan aimed at allowing limited mining of clay as has historically been carried out for centuries without spoiling the wildlife and amenity value of the woodland.



East Weald, The Bishops Avenue, London N2

Project type: Arboricultural survey and management plan
Client: Western Architects
Size: 0.85 hectare
Details: The survey and management plan were produced as part of plans to redevelop this high value site (the former Chinese Embassy's visiting diplomats residence) which is located in an Area of Special Character and includes an important relic of Bishops Wood.
